"I love food! Regarding race food in general, I tin say that I'thou lucky to have Pauline, who follows me to races, cooking expert and healthy stuff.
"Personally, after feeling bad and having stomach problems, I cut down on gluten, as I take an intolerance. I'grand not gluten free, just I avoid information technology every bit much as I can and don't eat gluten the week of a race.
"Usually, the dark before the race, we eat some rice and chicken curry with some roasted vegetables in the oven (potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, leaks, etc.) or something similar, carbs and meat with a good poly peptide ratio.
"For breakfast, I don't change much and go for some scrambled eggs, ham, cheese and avocado with a tea and juice.
"The enduro day is long, and you need something that delivers the energy longterm. I constitute out that saccharide peaks early and and so you lot experience hungry.
"For lunch, usually we don't have much time, and nosotros eat some sports bars during the day. So, when I stop at the pits, I go for a quinoa or rice salad with some vegetables—mainly to have a different taste from the sweetness of the confined.
"During the race, I try to consume before I'm hungry, five minutes after the stage, and then I can digest in the transition. I avoid eating just before the start or information technology volition make my stomach work while I want to become hard. I get for a gel x–fifteen minutes before the stage to get some actress energy if needed, but not solid food."

"The night before a race I like to have some sort of pasta dish to carbo-load on and brand sure I'm hydrating during the solar day. The morning of it really just depends on how much fourth dimension I have to consume. Always coffee; that'southward a must. If I don't take much time earlier I'm on the bike, so I'll have ane or two pieces of toast with some avocado, salt, pepper and olive oil. If I have more time, then I like to have steel-cut oats with some nuts, fruit and maple syrup on top.
"Right before my race, I drink Fully Charged past Hammer Nutrition. During my race I'thou ordinarily drinking Mind and eating Hammer gels (both by Hammer Diet), which become me through the mean solar day unless it's something lasting over 4 hours. If this is the instance, then I'll try to eat some real food to go along me going, like toast with peanut butter and assistant.
"After the race I potable Recoverite within xx minutes, and if I have access to a blender, and so I'll make a shake with vegan protein, almond or cashew milk, ice, banana, peanut butter, chia seeds and cocoa powder."

"I remember proper nutrition is cardinal for living a good for you lifestyle and pursuing your goals. By fulfilling our bodies' needs and providing healthy food, nosotros can live on a higher spectrum. It's similar a race car. If you throw public pump gas in an F1 car, it is non going to drive every bit fast or smooth every bit information technology would if it were filled with top-of-the-line race fuel. We get what we put in is how I see it.
"Personally, I practise not follow any over-the-superlative strict diet, simply I practise prefer to swallow healthy across the board. I do virtually of my own cooking, considering I enjoy it, merely likewise to know what is going in my body, which consists of a heavy intake of meat, veggies, fruit, and always staying properly hydrated. I don't consider myself gluten gratuitous or dairy gratis; nevertheless, I rarely consume these products. Finding a nutrition that works for an individual's body is fundamental to performing at one'southward tiptop ability. Certain foods that may benefit some might not take the aforementioned outcome on others, so information technology is of import to find what works for your trunk. High protein, moderately high fat, and a ton of veggies is the general idea of my diet.
"Probably one of the most important aspects of nutrition while grooming is eating enough fuel for your body to perform at its peak and also recover to its best power. A nutritional deficit will negatively affect your body and mind to a betoken where instead of building and growing, you start to deteriorate. Now that is an extreme word, deteriorate, but it fits the bill well. Aforementioned can be said in the contrary direction. If yous eat fashion as well much nutrient, your body will shop it instead of burn it if it comes to the betoken where it has too much to assimilate and employ.
"In the offseason, while my training is focused on building strength and fettle for the season, I tend to eat more than I exercise in the center of my racing. That is because of the specific grooming I do, which demands a higher caloric intake in club to build and recover well. Mid season, I eat ordinarily. Not too much merely not too petty. This is because my goal is not to grow every bit much as information technology is to maintain and perform at meridian athleticism both mentally and physically. That beingness said, I practise tend to swallow more than nigh people considering I just dearest food [laughs]!"

"I used to swallow mountains of pasta the day before the race. Besides in the morning I was filling up my stomach with a huge breakfast—staff of life, muesli, etc. The reason nosotros did it that mode in this generation was the racing time was a minimum of 2 one/2 hours.
"Nino today eats regular the day before. Some carbs and poly peptide, such as potatoes and chicken.
"On race day it's a calorie-free breakfast and, three hours prior, plain white rice. For a ninety-minute race, this is plenty.

"I like to swallow pretty adventurously in full general and don't have whatsoever allergies or special diets. I attempt to follow the "common sense diet" of variety, balance and moderation. That said, I've been trying to reduce the amount of meat I'm eating, every bit I realized I was having some sort of meat nearly every meal. Instead, I'g reaching for more institute proteins and trying to have at least a couple of totally vegetarian days each week.
"Pre-race, I typically go with some sort of carbohydrate base such as rice, sweet potatoes or quinoa. Forth with that, I'll accept chicken or fish. For longer races, I focus on upping the fatty with something like an avocado or ii. I typically shy away from bulky vegetables the night before an event.
"Morning of, I have eggs and toast almost every time. Honestly, I have the same breakfast almost every morning: three eggs plus toast or a bagel with foam cheese, jelly or butter. Sometimes I'll get fancy and combine the eggs and bread to brand French toast. For longer races, I'll add an avocado for the toast spread. I'll as well drink a Red Bull earlier every race.
"Mail service-race, I get a GU recovery drink every bit soon as possible, then pretty much what-ever I'm craving. Unless information technology'south a stage race, I commonly attempt to treat myself post race to whatever food I want. Pizza, a large burrito, tons of tacos, a burge—whatever sounds good.

"Nutrition is a huge part of beingness able to perform at the top level consistently. One of the things that makes diet challenging, yet, is that everyone is different and it takes a lot of trial and error to determine the exact program that volition best prepare your body to perform. For me, eating gluten-free waffles with Greek yogurt, fruit and maple syrup has provided a smashing source of pre-race fuel. This meal is full of both complex and uncomplicated carbohydrates every bit well as adequate protein. During a race, I follow a really specific fueling plan that is tailored to the race conditions and my personal race strategy. Post-race, I always accept a recovery shake right away but am slightly more flexible about what my post-race repast might be. Annihilation with some good protein that is tasty! Tacos are a favorite!"

MBA: Can yous share what kind of foods y'all similar to eat the night earlier a race, the morning time of the competition and during a race?
Erin: The night before a race I like to eat a meal including lean protein, a minimally processed carbohydrate and some veggies (preferably cooked). Some favorite meals are a chicken stir-fry or curry; or salmon, sweetness potatoes, and spinach. The morn before a race I typically accept oatmeal with banana, cinnamon, maple syrup, and either protein powder or Greek yogurt. Sometimes, if information technology'south a longer race and/or if I accept more time in the morning I will make pancakes. During a race I rely on GU energy gels. I prefer fruity flavors, and I will exercise a mix of caffeinated and not-caffeinated gels. After a race I volition mix upwardly some GU Recovery drinkable with almond or coconut milk if I tin can. Sometimes I travel with the single-serving-sized milk boxes just so I can make a creamier recovery drink, then it definitely tastes like a care for! I volition usually follow this up with either some yogurt and granola, fried eggs on toast, or some rice and veggies.
GEOFF KABUSH
Canadian Cross-State Superstar, fifteen-fourth dimension National Champion
For me, nutrition and refueling are just as important midweek after longer training rides. Loading the energy stores with timely food after big rides wednesday is just as of import as cramming nutrient in the dark before, which might be too late. Drinking in warm atmospheric condition in the days leading up to a race can also exist critical to help the body adapt if your body isn't used to warm conditions. When it comes to the night earlier, I tend to stick to simple—carbohydrate meals that don't complicate digestion. Morning of, I often have poached eggs on toast or some kind of cereal/muesli/fruit/yogurt combination with some good java three to 4 hours earlier racing, depending on the result. I do try to finish sipping water xxx minutes before the start to avert discomfort and allow my bladder to empty before the gun goes off. If the race is hard, I often crave unproblematic, salty nutrient straight afterward; chips and guacamole with some coconut h2o are one of my favorite, quick, get-to snacks before a nicer dinner afterward.

MBA: What kind of foods do you commonly swallow to stay fit?
Mark: Organic meats harvested by friends and local ranchers. Lots of homegrown vegetables and fruits. I as well similar middle when it's deer season.
MBA: Earlier a hard ride, what exercise you similar to eat?
Mark: I start every solar day with a couple of hen eggs and a fruit smoothie with some ginger and turmeric. It depends on how long I'g riding. If it's an all-day ride, I'm getting a total-state breakfast. Salary and eggs, maybe some gravy if I'm motivated.
MBA: What would you consume during races?
Mark: When I was racing I did not demand much at all if the race was under two hours. Maybe a gel, that's about it. But, I had some interesting combos for some of those all-day rides. One time, on the Santa Cruz Hell Ride, I ate but sardines and dark chocolate.
MBA: What do you similar to consume after a hard ride or race?
Mark: Burgers and/or burritos. I always feel that if I ride or race difficult, then I accept earned any I require.
